Political parties of North Macedonia reached an agreement for the April 12 snap parliamentary elections after the country's bid for the accession negotiation with the European Union was denied in October last year.

SKOPJE, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Prime Minister of North Macedonia Zoran Zaev submitted his resignation to the parliament here on Friday as part of the agreement between the political parties to form a caretaker government 100 days before the snap parliamentary elections set for April 12.

The parliament on a noon session confirmed the resignation, and it is expected that a new caretaker government to be elected by midnight.

Zaev did not elaborate his move in front of the MPs, saying in a written statement that his move is in compliance with the agreement for forming a caretaker government before the elections.

His party, the Social Democratic Union party (SDSM), nominated incumbent Minister for Interior Affairs Oliver Spasovski to lead the caretaker government.

Immediately after the confirmation of the resignation by the parliament, President Stevo Pendarovski gave the mandate to Spasovski to form the new cabinet.

Later on Friday Spasovski is expected to present the working program of his caretaker government and nominate the new ministers.

"Our main assignment is for the state to continue with its progress and to make sure that we will have fair and democratic elections, to enable the citizens to be free in making their decision," Spasovski said after receiving the mandate.
