GAZA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- A United Nations official in Gaza Strip warned on Thursday that the current calm in the Palestinian enclave is misleading and the unstable situation could lead to explosion any time.

Adnan Abu Hasna, media advisor for the United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), sounded alarm over the dangers of an explosion in Gaza due to the ongoing collapse of the living conditions there.

Abu Hasna's warning was published on Thursday by several local Gaza-based news websites, including the al-Ghad al-Arabi website.

"Calm in the Gaza Strip is misleading and very dangerous amid a growing rate of outrage and depression among the population, who feel that the world has abandoned them," said Abu Hasna.

He also warned that "having such a deteriorating living situation in the Gaza Strip without finding a real solution would certainly lead to an explosion and the entire situation will be in a deep risk."

Meanwhile, Abu Hasna said that the UNRWA needs around 30 million U.S. dollars to resume and fulfill food distribution to Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip, a home for 2 million people.

The UN official stressed that 80 percent of the Gaza Strip's population depend on humanitarian aid, noting that it "has been under an Israeli blockade for 13 years."

"Exports and imports are restricted in Gaza, except in rare cases, while the rates of poverty and unemployment are increasing," said Abu Hasna.

Israel has been imposing a blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, right after the Islamic Hamas movement violently seized control of the territory.

Since then, Israel has waged three large-scale military offensives on the coastal enclave, leaving behind massive destruction of the infrastructure and houses.
