WINDHOEK, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The Namibia Boxing Federation (NABF) has set a target of at least 10 boxers to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan, an official said on Friday.

Robert Haihambo, NABF's public relation officer said that the federation is optimistic of the goal if funds become available.

The boxers could qualify for the Tokyo 2020 through competitions like All African Games, AFBC Elite African Confederation Boxing Championships, AIBA Men's World Boxing Championship.

"The issue of who represents the country for any event is based on two things, namely the availability of funds to send a full team, the quota restriction by affiliate bodies regarding how many boxers can go and represent and lastly when there are such quota restrictions the NABF selects the very best boxers to represent the country," Haihambo said.

"Notably, Namibia managed to bring three bronze medals from past Olympic Games, namely, Jonas Metheus, Joseph 'Smokey' Hilongwa and Paulus Ambunda. These are thus stepping stones for the new crop of talented boxers. Namibia is aiming for Olympic gold medals," he added.
