BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) -- The following are the highlights of China's key education news from the past week:

-- China to build world-class higher vocational colleges

The Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Finance will jointly build up a batch of world-class higher vocational colleges with Chinese characteristics.

According to a guideline that was jointly released by the two ministries, China will concentrate on building around 50 quality higher-vocational colleges.

-- China regulates after-school training institutions

The MOE has made progress in regulating after-school training institutions. An overhaul by the ministry covered 401,000 after-school training institutions last year, targeting unlicensed operation and extracurricular programs that put students under too much pressure.

Nearly 270,000 after-school institutions were found to have problems, and 98.9 percent of them have completed rectifications.
