PARIS, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- French President Emmanuel Macron held a telephone conversation with his American counterpart Donald Trump to discuss Washington's plan to pull out its forces from Syria, the Elysee said on Tuesday.

"In the context of ... U.S. troops withdrawal from northeast Syria, the president of the republic stressed the importance of close coordination among members of the international coalition so that the security of all our partners will be ensured," the Elysee said in a statement.

During a telephone conversation held late on Monday, "French and American presidents reiterated their determination to uphold the red line on the use of chemical weapons in Syria," it added.

By the end of 2018, Trump ordered to withdraw forces from Syria, saying that the Islamic State (IS) insurgents have been defeated.

Unlike its American partner, France will carry out military operations against the terrorist group to totally wipe out its remaining pockets in the Arab country, French Defense Minister Florence Parly said in a recent interview.

France was one of the first European countries to join the international coalition against the IS.

Around 1,000 troops including special forces have been based in the north of the country, deployed alongside local Kurdish and Arab forces.
