SUVA, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has activated the National Emergency Operation Center for the incoming Tropical Cyclone Mona.

NDMO Director Anare Leweniqila confirmed on Friday that they have officers to monitor on the ground and are working closely with relevant emergency operators.

"We are also working closely with the Ministry of Education on the list of evacuation centers. So far, no evacuation center has been activated," Leweniqila said.

"Please take heed of all the weather bulletins that has been issued by the Fiji Meteorological Services and also take necessary precautions of the advisory that has been issued on the radios and the constant update we have on our social media platforms," he said.

Fijians who live on low lying areas prone to flooding and storm surges were advised to know their nearest safe high ground where their evacuation center is located and the safest access route.

Parents were told to ensure the safety of their children and not allow them to swim in flooded rivers or creeks to avoid drowning.

Motorists were told not to attempt to drive through flooded areas as this is the cause of most flood-related deaths in Fiji.

Mariners, especially small boat owners were advised not to venture in rough seas to avoid incidents that may cause loss of lives at seas as recently experienced.
