YANGON, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- A missing Myanmar border guard police has been found killed in a counter-attack against an ambush in Maungtaw, Rakhine state by an unidentified armed group in Bangladesh, Myanmar News Agency reported Sunday.

Jointly searched by border guard police forces of Myanmar and Bangladesh, the body of policeman Aung Kyaw Thet with gunshot wounds in his face, arms and legs was found near a hill inside Bangladesh on Dec. 21 with a detonator being also discovered underneath his body.

The body has been carried back to the Myanmar side for burial, Myanmar Police Force was quoted as saying.

A team of Myanmar security police patrolling along the border with Bangladesh was ambushed by an unidentified group on Dec. 17 between border post No. 41 and 42 in region-2, Maungtaw township of Rakhine state at 3:15 p.m. local time.

In a counter-attack on the attackers, one police received a bullet wound, while another was missing.

Myanmar's border guard force has been regularly carrying out joint patrol with Bangladesh counterparts to prevent terrorist activities along the two countries' border as well as illegal immigration and trading.

Myanmar and Bangladesh agreed at a ministerial meeting in October last year on 10 points relating to the promotion of cooperation in strengthening border security and law enforcement.

The 10 points covered combating terrorism, illegal border crossing, repatriation and verification of citizenship for those people who were displaced to Bangladesh, triggered by conflict in Myanmar's western Rakhine state as well as opening border liaison offices.

The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army extremists launched attacks on police outposts in Myanmar's Rakhine State on Aug. 25 last year, displacing a vast number of residents to border areas with Bangladesh.
