BERLIN, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- 82 percent of Germans are familiar with the term artificial intelligence (AI), but 53 percent know only vaguely what it means, a survey published on Monday showed.

The survey, commissioned by German technology giant Bosch and carried out by the market research institute Innofact, polled 1,022 people throughout Germany between the ages of 18 and 69 in October.

85 percent of respondents of the study still have no clear picture of the purposes that AI applications serve today.

Two-thirds of interviewees believe that manufacturing and mobility are going to benefit significantly from AI while half of the participants also said they could imagine working with a robot in the future.

According to Bosch, one example of how AI can benefit people is automated driving. Smart technology could use AI "to prevent human errors from happening in the first place". Numbers by the Federal Statistical Office show that in 2017 nearly 9 out of 10 traffic accidents in Germany were caused by human errors.

Michael Bolle, chief digital and technology officer at Bosch, said that "the more intelligent systems shape everyday life, the more important it is to show people their benefits, and in this way to foster acceptance for this key technology."

The survey was published on the occasion of the first AI CON in the German city of Renningen, which started Monday.
