VIENNA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China plays an "active role" in promoting mutual compatibility and interoperability between Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), a senior UN official said.

As one of the four core providers in International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG) with its BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, China has already held extensive exchanges and consultations with countries possessing navigation satellite systems, ICG Executive Secretariat Sharafat Gadimova told Xinhua in a written interview.

China adheres to the concept that BeiDou belongs to China, and also to the world. In connection with BeiDou, China upholds the principles of openness, cooperation, and resource sharing, Gadimova said shortly after the 13th meeting of ICG in Xi'an, northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

China has been attaching great importance to cultivating talents in the field of GNSS, and has been keen to promote international GNSS education and training, she said.

Aiming to enhance the capabilities of ICG member states in the use of GNSS and related applications at the regional and international levels, China has established the Regional Center for Space Science and Technology Education for Asia and the Pacific in Beijing, which also serves as one of the information centers for ICG.

The ICG information centers are working towards the establishment of a network of institutions involved or interested in GNSS, as well as towards identifying new applications that could be developed in the regions in question on the basis of global navigation satellite systems and their services, she said.

Taking into account the active role of China in the application subgroup of the ICG Working Group on "Enhancement of GNSS Performance, New Services and Capabilities", the Working Group recommended introducing China as the third co-chair of the Working Group in 2015, she said.

Currently, China together with India and the European Space Agency is leading the work of this Working Group.

Established in 2005 under the umbrella of the United Nations, the Vienna-based ICG, promotes voluntary cooperation on matters of mutual interest related to civil satellite-based positioning, navigation, timing, and value-added services. China joined the committee in Sept. 2007.

With the participation of states members of the United Nations, intergovernmental bodies and non-governmental organizations, ICG has become an important platform for communication and cooperation in the field of global satellite navigation.
