HERAT, Afghanistan, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- An annual security conference wrapped up in western Afghan city here on Saturday, with speakers discussing ways for ensuring peace and security in the war-torn country.

The two-day meeting was attended by participants from different local and international institutions and delegations from regional countries.

The meeting was organized by Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies, an independent Afghan research institute, and the speakers focused on Afghan security and peace at the event starting Friday in the city, capital of western Afghan province of Herat.

"My country Afghanistan has suffered the most during the past four decades of the ongoing war than any other nations in the modern time," Deputy Chairman of Afghan High Peace Council Nadir Naeem told the event.

"It is time about putting an end to this costly war and let the Afghans have the right to live in peace and dignity," he said.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been on the rampage since the beginning of 2015 when the Afghan security forces assumed full responsibilities of security from the United States and NATO troops.

The Afghan civilians continue to bear the brunt of armed conflicts as more than 2,790 civilians were killed and over 5,250 others injured in conflict-related incidents in the first nine months of the year, according to figures released by the United Nations mission in the country.
