DUBAI, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Department of Seaports and Customs of Sharjah, a sheikhdom in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on Wednesday signed a sister port agreement with the Diamond State Port Corporation of the U.S. state of Delaware to cooperate in global trade and logistics, UAE daily Gulf news reported.

Both sides also agreed to exchange information, and build mutually beneficial commercial, technological and cultural synergies, according to the report.

The agreement also enables private entities within the catchment area of the respective port authorities to collaborate on trade and investment prospects.

Jeffrey Bullock, secretary of the federal state of Delaware, signed the agreement at the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce with Sheikh Khalid Bin Abdullah Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Seaports and Customs.

Sharjah is one of the seven emirates belonging to the UAE.

Sharjah-based port operator Gulftainer plans to invest 580 million U.S. dollars in developing the cargo terminal capabilities of the Port of Wilmington to upgrade its overall productivity through a new 1.2 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) container facility, said Gulf news.

Gulftainer currently operates the Canaveral Cargo Terminal in Port Canaveral in Florida after winning a 35-year concession in 2015.

The Port of Wilmington is the biggest North American port for fresh fruit imports into the United States.
