MACAO, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Macao's total revenue of the industrial establishments amounted to 11.54 billion patacas (about 1.43 billion U.S. dollars) in 2017, up by 12.1 percent year-on-year, the special administrative region's statistic service said here on Saturday.

According to the Macao Industrial Survey for 2017 released by Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), the intermediate consumption and compensation of employees totalled 6.10 billion and 2.20 billion patacas respectively (about 757 million and 273 million dollars), up by 12.3 percent and 6.7 percent year-on-year.

Therefore, the gross surplus, which equals total revenue minus total expenditure (intermediate consumption and compensation of employees), of the industrial sector grew by 15.6 percent year-on-year to 3.25 billion patacas (about 403 million dollars).

Gross value added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy totalled 5.45 billion patacas (about 676 million dollars), up by 11.9 percent year-on-year.

A total of 932 establishments were operating in industrial production in 2017, an increase of 50 as compared to 2016, with 37 establishments engaging in manufacture of food and beverages. Total number of persons engaged in the industrial sector went up by 451 to 12,498.

Total revenue of the manufacturing sector rose by 4.2 percent year-on-year to 7.05 billion patacas (about 875 million dollars), mainly due to a nearly 30-percent growth in revenue from manufacture of food and beverages, which accounted for the largest share (34.7 percent) of the sector.

Total revenue of the electricity, gas and water supply sector rose by 27.2 percent year-on-year to 4.49 billion patacas (about 557 million dollars) due to increased electricity generation.

The Macao Industrial Survey covers mining and quarrying, manufacturing, and electricity, gas and water supply sectors. In 2017, there was no active establishment in the mining and quarrying sector in Macao.
