CAIRO, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul-Gheit said on Monday that he does not believe that the Houthi rebels intend to reach a peaceful settlement to the conflict in Yemen.

Aboul-Gheit's comments came during his meeting with Yemeni Foreign Minister Khaled al-Yamani in the Egyptian Capital Cairo.

In a statement, Aboul-Gheit's spokesman Mahmoud Afifi said that the secretary general was briefed on the military operations in the Yemeni western coast and other areas.

The two officials also discussed the latest developments in the Yemeni crisis in light of the failure of the last round of negotiations due to the Houthi leaders' absence.

During the meeting, Yamani said the Houthis' pretexts for not attending the Geneva talks proved that they do not seek any peaceful solution to the crisis, Afifi added.

The Yemeni top diplomat stressed the importance of reaching a political solution based on the Gulf Initiative, the outcome of the Yemen's National Dialogue Conference and the UN resolutions topped by no. 2216.

Yemen has been stuck in a civil war since the Houthi rebels overran much of Yemen and seized all northern provinces in late 2014, including the capital Sanaa.

Saudi Arabia is leading an Arab military coalition that intervened in the Yemeni war in 2015 to support the government of exiled President Hadi.

More than 10,000 Yemenis, mostly civilians, have been killed in the war, with about three million others displaced.
