NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- The 29th seed Dominika Cibulkova from Slovakia ousted reigning Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber from Germany to advance into the 2018 U.S. Open women's singles round of 16.

From a set down in the thrilling encounter, the 29-year-old Slovak knocked out three-time major winner and No. 4 seed Kerber 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the third round.

The 2014 Australian Open finalist hammered 40 winners in two hours and 13 minutes and score her first Top 10 victory of the season.

Cibulkova became the latest player to knock out a Grand Slam champion in the new Louis Armstrong Stadium, joining Kaia Kanepi (beat Simona Halep), Karolina Muchova (beat Garbine Muguruza) and Lesia Tsurenko (beat Caroline Wozniacki).

Kerber's elimination has none of this year's Grand Slam winners left in the U.S. Open, and only one of the top-four seeds on the women's side is still in the tournament after three rounds.

Top-ranked Simona Halep, the French Open champion, was eliminated in the first round. Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki, the No. 2 seed, fell in the second.

Only No. 3 seed and defending champion Sloane Stephens remains. Enditem
