LOS ANGELES, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Sony Pictures Animation's "Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated 44.1 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend.

The computer-animated comedy film is the third installment in the "Hotel Transylvania" franchise. The first and second installment opened with 42.5 million dollars and 48.4 million dollars in 2013 and 2015 respectively, both scoring top marks at the North American box office at the debut weekend.

With a budget of 80 million dollars, "Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation" is directed by Genndy Tartakovsky and features the voices of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James and David Spade among others. The plot of the film follows the monster family who embark on a vacation on a luxury monster cruise ship and then turn into a nightmare.

The film has brought in 46.4 million dollars internationally this weekend, pushing its global cume to 100 million dollars through Sunday, according to studio figures collected by comScore.

The film is the sequel to 2015's "Ant-Man," and the twentieth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Peyton Reed, the film stars Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Evangeline Lilly as the Wasp.

Universal's action film "Skyscraper" opened in third place with an estimated 25.48 million dollars in its first weekend for a global cume of 65.9 million dollars. Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber and starring Dwayne Johnson, the film came in well behind expectations against its production budget of 125 million dollars.
