AMMAN, July 8 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Resident and Humanitarian coordinator Anders Pedersen said Sunday the number of displaced Syrians at the borders with Jordan is "very low."

"We have a very low number of people that are still there and as far as we understand they are almost men," Pedersen told a press conference.

The UN official commended Jordan's efforts during the crisis.

The United Nations provided needed assistance in cooperation with the Jordanian partners to the displaced Syrians, he said, adding that aid will continue to be provided as long as there is a need.

With regard to the injured Syrians, he said "we are still getting some patients into the clinic and they will be treated in very close coordination with Jordan army."

He added that the UN will focus on sending aid to inside Syrian territories, especially in the southwestern parts of Syria.

According to latest UN reports, hundreds of thousands fled the violence in Daraa to the southwestern parts of the country.

Thousands of Syrians returned home in Daraa and nearby areas after a deal was reached between the Syrian regime and the opposition in the south.

He called for continued aid and for intensive efforts to cease hostilities.

Jordan, which announced the closure of its borders with Syria to prevent any influx of new waves of refugees, is home to 1.3 million Syrian refugees.
