BEIJING, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Facial recognition will assist the safeguarding of campuses, according to emergency management experts on Wednesday.

Tang Jun, director of the Institute of Emergency Management at Renmin University of China, said at a seminar in Beijing that AI including facial recognition had the advantages of high precision and early intervention in protecting safety in and around the campuses.

"The facial recognition can push forward the efficiency of campus safety management," Tang said.

The report on the work of the government, released in March this year, said the country needs to use the Internet and other IT-based approaches to strengthen oversight over childcare at preschools, making sure parents have peace of mind.

The State Council mapped out measures in April 2017 to ensure safety on campus, stating that schools must have necessary security personnel as well as CCTV systems and alarms should conditions allow.

Facial recognition has not yet been widely applied in protecting the safety of China's campuses, especially in primary schools, secondary schools and kindergartens.

"The technology has sound prospects for preventing campus accidents, preventing the abduction of children and assisting anti-terrorism actions," said Zhou Xi, chief executive officer of CloudWalk Technology.

The Ministry of Education in April this year issued a detailed action plan saying that Chinese universities should have optimized systems that fit both scientific innovation, especially new-generation AI development and disciplinary growth, by 2020.
