KUWAIT CITY, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait follows up "with great interest" U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of withdrawing from Iran's nuclear deal, the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry was quoted as saying Wednesday.

Kuwait had welcomed the agreement when it was announced in 2015, especially that it was endorsed by the UN Security Council's Resolution 2231, the state-run Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) quoted a source in the ministry as saying.

At that time, Kuwait underlined the necessity of Iran's honoring its full commitments in line with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reiterating that the pact would contribute to boosting regional security and stability, the source said.

If the U.S. takes a certain stance toward the pact because its proposed amendments to the agreement were not approved, Kuwait "understands and respects the U.S. move," the source noted.

Kuwait has always emphasized the necessity of no-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and respect to their sovereignty in line with international charters and norms, the source added.

The foreign ministry stressed Kuwait's unwavering stance calling for turning the Middle East into a zone free of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), at the time when everybody is seeking to achieve security and stability in the region that has suffered from unrests and wars for a long time.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the U.S. will withdraw from the Iranian nuclear deal, a landmark agreement signed in 2015 between Iran and six major powers.

Trump claimed that the deal had failed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons or supporting terrorism in the region.
