KAMPALA, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei won the 10,000m gold medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on Friday.

He recorded a Commonwealth Games record time of 27:19.62, while Canada's Mohamed Ahmed was second with a time of 27:20.56.

Kenya's Rodger Khemoi came third in the race. The other Ugandan runners Jacob Kiplimo, aged 17 and Timothy Toroitich were fourth and seventh respectively.

Uganda has now won three gold and two bronze medals at the Games. Stella Chesang won gold in the women's 10,000m race, while Mercyline Chelangat picked up bronze in the same race.

Boxer Juma Miiro also picked up a bronze medal when he lost out to India's Panghal Amit at the semifinal stage in the light flyweight category on Friday.

"I promised that there were still more medals coming for us in athletics. We are also optimistic ahead of the marathon final on Sunday," Dominic Otuchet, Chairman of the Uganda Athletics Federation told Xinhua in an interview.
