CAIRO, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Egypt strongly condemned on Tuesday the failed attempt to assassinate Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamadallah in the Gaza Strip, which left six injured.

In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said such terrorist acts are meant to hinder achieving the Palestinian national reconciliation, stressing they will always fail.

Earlier in the day, a bomb went off near the convoy of Hamdallah during a rare visit to the Israeli blockaded territory.

Six of Hamdallah's bodyguards were slightly injured and three cars were damaged in the attack.

"Egypt will keep exerting efforts to achieve reconciliation and empower the Palestinians run their affairs according to a unified vision to achieve the aspirations of the Palestinian people," it said.

Last October, Egypt mediated a reconciliation deal between Islamic Hamas movement which rules Gaza, and Fatah party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to heal their decade-long rift.

Under the deal, Hamas, which rules Gaza since its routed forces loyal to Abbas in 2007, should have fully handed over power to Hamdallah's Ramallah-based consensus government in December.

However, the ongoing differences between the two sides have forced a delay of the implementation of the reconciliation deal until further notice.

A senior Egyptian security delegation has been in Gaza for several weeks holding talks between the two sides to bridge the gaps and resolve the outstanding issues that block the implementation of the reconciliation deal.
