DOHA, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has welcomed the invitation by the U.S. President Donald Trump to visit the United States in April to resolve the ongoing Gulf dispute, Qatar news agency (QNA) reported late on Thursday.

During a phone conversation held between the two leaders, Thani and Trump discussed the means of enhancing strategic relations to serve the common interests of the two countries, QNA said.

According to a statement by the White House, they also discussed Qatar's efforts in boosting cooperation with the Gulf countries to counter Iranian activities and defeat terrorists and extremists.

On Feb. 24, U.S. government announced that senior leaders of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar would meet the U.S. president in the next couple of months.

The invitation aims at resolving a dispute between the Gulf countries.

Qatar, which hosts the U.S. and international forces at Al Udeid Air Base, is suffering from a siege imposed by its Gulf neighbors since June 5, 2017.

The blockading countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt, cut all ties with Qatar over its alleged support of terrorists and interference in the affairs of other countries. Doha has strongly denied the charges.
