SYDNEY, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Police in Australia's New South Wales state will roll out additional officers and safety measures for major New Year's Eve celebrations this weekend, with more than 1 million revelers expected in central Sydney for its popular fireworks countdown alone, authorities said Friday.

Specialist police support, including riot squads, dog units, mounted horse patrols and marine command teams, will complement officers in the city and across the state.

The focus will be on public safety, alcohol-related crime and anti-social behavior, State Police Deputy Commissioner Jeff Loy said in a statement.

"We know big crowds will take advantage of our spectacular harbour again this year and we want them to be able to celebrate safely which is why we have been planning for this event for more than 12 months," he said.

"Sydney is renowned as the world's premier New Year's Eve destination so let's make sure it's memorable for all the right reasons."

The state capital's New Year's countdown fireworks displays, which draw huge domestic and foreign crowds, are set to illuminate the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House waterside areas. Major road closures and marine checks will also help ensure that revelers on land and boats out on the harbor are "expertly managed," police said.
