NAIROBI, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Kenya named a youthful squad to compete in the 11-nation Zone Five African Games qualifiers to be staged here from June 5-10.

The hosts face a strong challenge to break the jinx and return to the continental stage in men's volleyball and will have to beat Uganda, Rwanda, champions Egypt, Tanzania, Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Burundi, South Sudan, Djibouti and Eritrea.

Only one slot is reserved in each of the seven regions to join hosts Morocco in the finals in August.

"I have full trust in this team to carry the day. They are ambitious, young and talented. We have started a long process to change around our team," said Kenyan coach Moses Epoloto on Tuesday.

Three debutantes who have to impress the coach are Nicholas Kipchirchir, Enock Mogeni and Nick Kimutai.

Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) technical director David Lung'aho said the team also retained a few experienced players, saying that "it is a strong squad and the most important thing is that we are planning with transition in mind. This is the best squad in recent times. It is a good opportunity for them to grow."

"We have the 2024 Olympic Games in focus for this team," he added.

The team will be led by captain Jairus Kipkosgei, together with other experienced players like Mike Chemos and setter Kelvin Kiokosgei.
