16 drug traffickers arrested in Afghanistan

KABUL, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Afghan law enforcement agencies have arrested 16 people in connection with drug-related crimes in three provinces, authorities said Tuesday.

"Afghan Counter Narcotics Police and detective security organization arrested 16 people on suspicion of transportation of drugs and narcotics in Kabul, Nangarhar and Farah provinces over the past seven days," the Counter-Narcotics Criminal Justice Task Force of Afghanistan said in a statement.

Those among the detainees included a woman and a foreign national.

The cases were sent to the Counter Narcotic Justice Center, a special Afghan court for jurisdiction of major drug cases, for further investigation, the statement added.

Police also seized 31 kg of heroin, 940 kg of opium, 271 kg of hashish, 150 kg chemical elements that has been used in making heroin, 19 mobile phones and four different types of vehicles from the suspects, according to the statement.

The security forces also confiscated local and foreign currencies from the suspects, totaling around 1,700 U.S. dollars.?
